Register for the next Yale ’64 Authors Book Club

June 15, 2022

Classmates:

You may have already registered for our July 14 Yale ’64 Authors Book Club but, if not, this would be an excellent time to do so. You'll find the registration link below.

The Book Club will feature classmate Sydney Lea (or Syd as we knew him), who will discuss his poetry and read from his latest book of poetry, titled Here. Pete Putzel ’64 will lead the discussion.

Following his undergraduate years in New Haven, Syd returned to Yale to take an M.A. in American Studies and a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature. In a 43-year career, he has taught at Dartmouth, Middlebury, Wesleyan, Yale (Stiles seminar), and at Eotvos Lorand University in Budapest and Franklin College in Lugano, Switzerland. A former Pulitzer finalist and winner of the 1998 Poets’ Prize, Syd served as founding editor of the national literary magazine New England Review, still very much alive after 45 years, and was Vermont’s Poet Laureate from 2011 to 2015. He is the author of 23 books, 14 of them poetry.

In 2021, he was presented with his home state of Vermont’s most prestigious artist’s distinction: the Governor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts.

Syd's most recent book of poems, Here, will be our focus. Syd will speak briefly about his pivot from a conventional academic career to the life of a poet. He will then discuss what gave rise to the poems collected in Here. To facilitate the group discussion to follow, we urge you to purchase and read Here (available from Amazon and elsewhere).

The Zoom meeting will be on July 14, 2022, at 4:00pm EDT (1:00pm PDT). Registration is required. If you haven't already registered, click the following link:

You’ll receive an immediate confirmation email with a link to the meeting. That link will be unique to you. On the day of the event you’ll be sent the link again, as a reminder and to ensure that you won’t have to hunt for it.

Mark your calendar for July 14 at 4:00pm EDT (1:00pm PDT).

Cheers,
