Kicking off the Reunion

October 18, 2023

To the Class of 1964:

We will hold our 60th reunion in the spring of 2024. Sixty years!  Amazing. We invite you to come back to New Haven for four days next spring, May 23-26, to share what Yale was in our time and experience the Yale of Today.

The Yale of today is not the Yale of our time, but it is still as intellectually alive and just as exciting. Reunion will give you a chance to experience that excitement once more and also to reconnect with classmates, all of whom were selected by Yale because they were special and unique.

John Evans and Ted Wagner, as co-chairs of this Reunion, welcome your suggestions. Please preregister for the reunion to let us know whether or not you intend to come.

Our reunion will be similar to past reunions in format:

Thursday:

Friday and Saturday:
  • Faculty lectures in the morning, particularly focusing on the “Yale of Today.”
  • Class of 1964 programming in the afternoon: several parallel sessions of “conversations,” as we called discussion groups five years ago, with a selection of topics to choose from. Already scheduled:
    • “Technologies for Remediation of Climate Change,” following on the recent Zoom presentation by Len Baker and Bob Archer.
    • Ed Massey will lead a session on “Writing and Publishing” for those who would like to write memoirs, family histories, or capture life experiences and would like to understand options for publishing.
    • Joe Wishcamper is structuring a panel on legacies and diversity at Yale.  Will our grandchildren and great-grandchildren be given any additional consideration?
    • Sam Francis will discuss “Evolution ... From Soup to Nuts,” spanning the history of life including its origin, its evolution, and its inevitable extinction.
    • Other topics include “Generative Artificial Intelligence” (like ChatGPT) led by Tom Barnard; Al Rossiter on pros, cons, and issues about moving into a retirement community; Howard Gillette will lead a panel on Yale engagement with New Haven; and Bruce Driver will provide an analysis of the key Senate races next year.
    • Many other topics have been proposed and will be added to the program.  Do you have a topic you want to discuss with classmates? If so, would you be willing to lead a discussion group? Get in touch with John Evans or Ted Wagner and get on the program.
  • The Class Memorial Service will be Friday afternoon after the Class discussion groups.
  • President Salovey will address all reunion classes on Saturday afternoon after our discussion groups, followed by a celebration of Yale Singing.

Sunday Morning:

  • Brunch will be in our college, not in Commons.

We will produce a hardcover Reunion Book for this reunion, edited by Bill Galvin. Please browse to the Reunion Book portal to input your personal information and add an essay about your experiences and perspectives. To log in, you'll need your 5-digit ID code, which is *|ID|*. See here for more information. These books take on greater and greater value as time goes by; they are a key tool for your friends, family, and future generations to know who you were and who you are today.

Come back for your 60th reunion — see the Yale of today — meet its people, tour its facilities, feel its vibe, and share the experience with classmates, spouses, and partners. Enjoy a renewed association with one of the world's finest academic institutions. YOU are YALE — yesterday, today, and tomorrow.

Best wishes,
