Only with the news of Stewart Flory’s death on November 27, 2020 did we learn that he had been honored, together with his wife Marleen, with a named fellowship at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter MN where he founded and led the Classics Department for many years.

Stewart’s obituary reported: “Flory was an expert in Greek literature and history. He was a beloved and influential classroom teacher, teaching a wide range of courses including Greek, Latin, Greek History, and Myth. His dedication to Classics education led him to direct two National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Summer Seminars for School Teachers on the Gustavus campus.”

The Flory-Freiert Fellowship Fund was established in 2010 with the generous support of friends of Gustavus Classics. Named in honor of Marleen and Stewart Flory and Patricia and William Freiert, the four distinguished classicists who built the Classics department over the course of more than 120 years of combined service, the Flory-Freiert Fellowship offers Gustavus students the opportunity to pursue their interests in Classics by funding a project of their own design through an award of up to $2,000.
