March 6, 2020

Note from Tony Lavely, ’64 Class Secretary: Earlier this year, we posted a report by Chris Getman about a Yale doctor, Yetsa Tuakli-Wosornu ’01, whose work he admired. Here is an update.

Happy 2020! Praying the year has started beautifully for you and yours. Thanking Chris for the warm introduction, it's lovely to meet you and Tony.

Chris has probably told you about SELY (here), my lab focused on athletes with disabilities in Ghana. A few happy updates:

  1. I am just getting back from one month in Ghana where we did amazing work with our cohort of disabled athletes, and pushed our bamboo wheelchair project forward! Next step is to renovate our Paralympic athletes' clubhouse in Accra (they represent the nation internationally but live, shamefully, in squalor. It's not right, and it's a Paralympic year).

  2. We got our first major gift ($50,000) from Mr. Geoff Kimball (Yale '55) on Monday! We really needed it. We have three spring conferences we've been invited to: International Olympic Committee (Monte Carlo, Monaco; March), International Society of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine (Orlando, Florida), Safe Sport International (Quebec City, Canada; April).

Excited to share our athletes' voices on these international stages, and I'm happy to share more about our work by phone or in-person meeting if there's interest in this group. Lovely meeting everyone!
