June 20, 2021

EAST BRUNSWICK: Angus Kress Gillespie, Professor of American Studies at Rutgers University, has recently won the Award of Excellence, First Place, JAG Video Awards, for his interview with author Michael Gabriel on his book “The History of Diners in New Jersey.” The interview was recorded on January 17, 2020, and later broadcast on East Brunswick Television.

The award, recognizing important accomplishments of the past year, was made by the Jersey Access Group (JAG), a professional organization that unites municipalities, access channels, non-profit organizations, and content providers in a mission to improve communications to their communities. JAG advises, advocates, and educates in the areas of technology, legislation, and regulation impacting multiple media platforms.

Michael C. Gabriel is a lifelong New Jersey resident and a graduate of Montclair State University. His book on diners in New Jersey has been well reviewed. In the television interview, Gabriel explained that, although the industry is all but gone today, New Jersey was once the hub of diner manufacturing. Even today, classic American diners brighten New Jersey’s highways and main streets. They are the state’s ultimate gathering places.

When contacted, Professor Gillespie said that he feels highly honored and happy to have won this prestigious award. He said that he would strive hard to make more local television programs that spotlight New Jersey history and culture. He hopes to feature the state’s beautiful beaches, busy roads, and great food.
