Holcombe, Jones, Massey, Lavely ’64 serve breakfast at Sunrise Café

February 7, 2020

Note from Tony Lavely, ’64 Class Secretary:

Inspired by the work that Terry Holcombe and Marya have been doing at Sunrise Café in New Haven, I traveled a day early to our Class Council meeting to pull a shift myself on February 7. Other classmates have volunteered on visits to New Haven, as well: Ted Jones and Edward Massey.

The morning I worked we served over 100 guests. I was also impressed that there were six Yale undergraduates working in the kitchen. They were quite puzzled with us and asked, “We know why we’re here … but why are you guys here?”

Sunrise Cafe has been serving breakfast without charge to New Haven’s homeless and hungry since 2015. Each weekday morning, the Café welcomes guests to the undercroft of St. Paul and St. James, near Wooster Square and three blocks south of the New Haven Green, with white tablecloths, flowers, and a rotating menu of fresh, warm, nutritious, home-cooked food. Your generosity opens our doors.

If you can’t get to New Haven to experience Sunrise Café yourself, you can help them with a donation.
