Tony Lavely ’64 lifts up Ebenezer Baptist Church on MLK Day

January 18, 2021

Tony Lavely, ’64 Class Secretary, writes:

On this Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, my thoughts go to Ebenezer Baptist Church, which is only three miles from my home. I’ve have been to the church in the “Sweet Auburn” District many times in the twelve years I’ve lived in Atlanta. Ebenezer is back in the news this month, with its current minister, Reverend Raphael Warnock, being elected to the U.S. Senate, the first African American elected to the Senate from Georgia. Patrick Caviness and I visited Ebenezer in 2014; Sam Francis and I visited there in 2018. It’s wonderful to see this historic church still being a channel for progressive social change. All of us remember the prayer Dr. King said over us in 1964, just four years after he had been named co-minister at Ebenezer.
