Joe Lieberman ’64 in conversation with Yale ’64 and ’65

January 19, 2022

In a Zoom event sponsored by the Yale Class of 1965 to which all 1964 classmates were invited, Joe Lieberman ’64 discussed his new book The Centrist Solution: How We Made Government Work and Can Make It Work Again, and the “No Labels” organization which he co-chairs. Sporting his 1964 Yale Reunion vest, Joe explained the historical background of “the centrist solution” and his hopes for the future.

The Zoom event was attended by over 200 people, almost equally split between the Classes of 1964 and 1965. The video recording of the event can be viewed here.

Questions from 1964 classmates came from:

  • Don Edwards: How can we citizens force the beneficiaries of our polarized politics (current office holders) to reform the system?

  • Michelle Mead (surviving spouse of John Armor): Now that both spouses often work, politicians and their families don’t live in the District anymore. Has this limited cross-party personal contact?

  • Stephen Bingham: How can you call Manchin and Sinema heroes when the are responsible for the failure to pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Bill?

  • Sam Francis: Would you agree that no solutions, centrist or otherwise, can be just and workable if all stakeholders aren’t represented equitably at the table?

  • Bobbie Francis: If the Republicans regain control of the Senate, don’t you think they will immediately do away with the filibuster?

  • Francis Snyder: Joe, what specific issues should “No Labels” focus on?

  • John More: Wasn’t it a sign when my friend Chuck Hagen resigned because he couldn’t get anything done?
