Tony Reno (honorary ’64) holds Zoom football briefing

Tony Reno (honorary ’64) gave a virtual football briefing via Zoom on March 16.

It ranged from an assessment of the 2021 season, through recruiting and off-season training, to spring football.

Reno began by congratulating and encouraging the Yale men’s basketball team in March Madness and the Yale women’s hockey team in the Frozen Four.

Tony Lavely ’64 posed a couple of questions: “Will Mercer University in Georgia get back on the schedule?” Answer: “There are no plans to reschedule Mercer from the canceled 2020 season.” Over 90 footballers (and some parents) attended the Zoom event.

Coincidentally, the Jeopardy! show that was televised on ABC during Coach Reno’s briefing asked this question in the “Double Jeopardy” round:

Before the Rose Bowl opened in 1922, this Ivy League Bowl pioneered circular seating in 1914.

None of the three contestants even offered a guess! (By the way, here’s another piece of trivia: The first telecast of Jeopardy! was in March 1964, near the end of our senior year.)

The Yale Bowl opened in 1914 with 70,000 seats, making it the largest stadium in the world. The Rose Bowl copied its design eight years later.
