Coach Tony Reno (honorary ’64) on “Building Yale Leaders”

May 12, 2022

Together with two faculty members from Yale School of Management (where Len Baker ’64 is on the Board), Head Football Coach Tony Reno (honorary ’64 classmate) spoke about “Leadership: Teamwork, Influence, and Strategy.” Zoe Chance and Barry Nalebuff were the other two members of the panel that was facilitated by Jim Hudak ’69.

Coach Reno has developed a very methodical plan to foster teamwork and leadership among Yale football teams. As part of the process, he has the players read two books: Legacy: What the All Blacks Can Teach Us About the Business of Life by James Kerr, and My Share of the Task by General Stanley McChrystal.

Zoe Chance, a Senior Lecturer at SOM, spoke about her teaching methods and her insights on influence. These are well documented in her book Influence is Your Superpower: The Science of Winning Hearts, Sparking Change, and Making Good Things Happen.

The third member of the panel was SOM Professor Barry Nalebuff (who co-founded Honest Tea) addressed negotiation and his book Split The Pie: A Radical New Way to Negotiate.

A video of the Zoom event can be viewed below. The video length is 1⅓ hours. Zoe Chance leads off for 7 minutes, followed by Barry Nalebuff for 8½ minutes, and then Tony Reno for 14 minutes. The remainder of the video is Q&A.
