Gerry Shea ’64 shares a collection of music for classmates in grief

When Gerry Shea saw the announcement of the death of Tony Lavely’s wife, Wanda, he sent Tony a compilation of music that Gerry finds helpful in moments of sadness. In turn, Tony is sharing it with other classmates.

  • Sibelius: Be Still My Soul, Thomas-Cumberland Choir

  • Mahler: Symphony #5 In C Sharp Minor - Adagietto; Herbert Von Karajan: Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra

  • Bach: (Vivaldi) Violin Concerto for Organ Hans Fagius

  • Ray Conniff Dancing in the Dark (Magical!). Conniff singers, incomparable dancing by Fred Astaire and Cyd Charisse. (Other Conniff (no dancing): Thanks for the Memories, Smoke Gets in Your Eyes, Kiss me once, talk of the town)

  • "David Daniels, Ombra Mai Fu" (He is a countertenor, and it's lovely — don't be disenchanted by the first few bars. Listen to the same piece sung by Dmitri Hvorostovsky.

  • "Myfanwy" (Astonishing, so beautiful it has, in effect, become the Welsh national hymn.)

  • "Nabucco: Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves from the opening gala in Oslo" (Verdi at his best.)

  • "An die musik — Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau

  • "An Sylvia" — Jussi Bjorling

  • "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" — extraordinary Hawaiian, the late Israel Kamakawiwo'ole, on the ukele

  • "L'enfance du Christ: Shepherds’ Farewell" — Robert Shaw. This is my favorite Christmas Carol — it is the Shepherds' Farewell to the Holy Family, from Berlioz.

  • "Wolfram's aria from Tannhäuser - O du mein holder Abendstern (Dmitri Hvorostovsky)"

  • Liszt Liebestraum (rêve d’amour), Barenboim

  • "Concierto para Piano y Orquesta No 5 en Fa menor - BWV 1056 - 2º Mov Largo - JS Bach – Glenn Gould." (With beautiful young women painted by Botticelli.)

  • Bach, Sheep May Safely Graze (Mormon) (Cantate de la Chasse)
    "Swan Lake Waltz"

  • "Beethoven Pathetique," Michiel Roosen

  •  "Alfred Brendel Shubert impromptu in G flat major". The sound is better, I think, on "Dailymotion" than on "Youtube". A favorite piece that my son Alexander plays. (As one of the comments on the video puts it, it looks as if Brendel is having a conversation with an old friend (the piano)).

  • Chopin, Etude no. 3 Tristesse, Lang Lang Waltz No. 7

  • Best: Soviet anthem (Red Army Choir). Technically: "Red Army Chorus, Russian National Anthem" (Stirring! Shows you how beautiful music can serve State Propaganda!)

  • Mary Martin, Ezio Pinza: "Some Enchanted Evening" (This is the piece as sung at the end of South Pacific. Pinza was perhaps the greatest bass of the 20th century, and how it shows here. Also, as you'll see, I'm sure they were having an affair.)

  • Cavalleria Rusticana, Intermezzo, Guildhall School of Music, Mascagni

  • Bach: Little Fugue in G Minor

  • Mendelssohn: Hebrides Overture

  • Richter: Mendelssohn Op. 19 no. 1 (SWW)
