Bay Area Classmate ’64 Zoom focuses on climate change

May 19, 2021

As he has done for recent monthly Zoom calls, Owen O’Donnell sent out a theme in advance for discussion on the May call. This month it was global warning. “Global warming is a problem for the entire planet. Each of us needs to do our part in solving the problem. What has been your contribution to solving the problem? This includes past activity and future activity. Every little bit helps so include even small changes in your lifestyle.”

Eight classmates attended the call, and the range of activity reported was wide. It was obvious that this group was even more concerned about climate change than classmates in other areas. The reason: the serious drought in California and the resulting forest fires.

Owen O’Donnell described his efforts at water capture and reuse in his home.

Mike Sherwood spoke about his long career in environmental law.

Sandy McKleroy referenced research on geoengineering done by Dane Wigington.

Bob Archer spoke passionately about the importance of carbon capture and the Citizens’ Climate Lobby. Bob also commended Paul Steiger for focusing on carbon credits in ProPublica.

Steve Bingham offered that his tireless efforts for Safe Streets (for bicycles) was itself a form of environmentalism.

Mike Brodsky talked about his experience with solar cooking.

Tony Lavely mentioned the work being done by Tony Lee and other classmates with the Zoom webinar series, “Can We Stop Climate Change.”

Although Len Baker could not be on this call, his article on climate strategy was included in the discussion.
