Ted Jones '64 reports on the 2025 fall golf outing

October 8, 2025

My flight into New Haven on October 6 held out great promise for fine weather for our two days of golf in the area: bright sun, warm weather, cooling breezes. And we were not disappointed.

On the first day, through the kindness and generosity of Dave Kalayjian, we were invited to play at his Clinton Country Club. The red carpet was clearly out. The staff were so helpful, the carts were festooned with “Y” insignia, a bag lunch was provided, and the course was a real treat to play, with lovely tree-lined fairways, interesting elevation changes and doglegs, and some water challenges, too many of which I found.

Enjoying the great experience were Mike Arons, Don Edwards, Butch Hetherington, Ted Jones, Dave and Marcia Kalayjian, Martin and Melissa Padley, Jan Truebner, John Tully, and a welcome returnee, Jim Kerr, back after a hiatus from our group. Martin had the great pleasure of playing with the three ladies.

Of course, dinner that evening was back at Mory’s, starting with a libation in the back bar attended by our favorite barkeep, the ever-gracious Marie. Dinner was under the welcoming and attentive care of Elise. Three of our players did not attend, but that did not impact the interesting and animated conversation, highlighted by a round-table at one point led by Marcia. And the Baker’s Soup, always a spicy treat, certainly did not disappoint.

While the weather stayed first rate the next day, we had only two golfers, Jones and Arons, to enjoy the challenges of the Lyman Orchards’ Jones course (of course), one of two 18-hole courses on the property. We had tried on two or three earlier occasions to book that course, which had been highly recommended by Evans, Hetherington, and Tully, but we were always pre-empted by long-scheduled full-day outings. Mike and I really enjoyed our round.

We are really excited at the prospect of our next gathering being back at the Yale course after it reopens next spring. Watch this space for a report on the new post-restoration look, and on the play. Hopefully we will have a large crowd of classmates anxious to return to our hallowed ground, get a look at the renovations, and play that great course.
